Creating a Valentine Display – part 2

In part one of Creating a Valentine Display I showed you how to decorate the mantle of your fireplace. In this post I’ll show you my step-by-step to decorate your hearth for Valentines Day.

This may be obvious, but I do want you to know that you can ONLY do this if you are NOT using your fireplace. This beautiful old house of ours has seven fireplaces but we use NONE of them, which is why I get to fill them with fun displays year round.

Okay, now that we have established that you are not setting fire in your home, at least in the fireplace, let the decorating  begin!

The First step is to add greenery to fill in the firebox. My yard here in Virginia is full of pine trees so this was an easy step for me. However, if you do not have access to pine boughs, you can use artificial branches including wreaths and garland. Don’t worry, it won’t be the focal point of your display so no one will even know they’re not real. Even though I have access to pine branches, I still often use artificial wreaths behind and beneath my displays so I don’t have to haul in as many branches.

After you put the artificial pine in place, just start arranging your pine branches on top.

Beware that bringing in live greenery may also bring in unwanted critters, as seen in this branch in front of the hearth – eek!

hearth 4Now that your greenery is in place you can have fun! You can use whatever you have around the house that makes you happy, or go out and find a new treasure. My daughter found this cherub head at a thrift shop and I found the red “LOVE” heart at a dollar store.

I added more silver Christmas bulbs and floral picks to tie the mantle into the hearth. These empty foil heart-shaped chocolate boxes spilling out of the fireplace add a little whimsy to the room.

I’ve collected these heart-shaped boxes through the years and now have a nice stack of them to use in my decorating (thanks, honey!).

Now it’s YOUR turn! Better yet, take a photo of your finished Valentine Display and post it on my Whimsybop facebook page so that we may all “ooh” and “ahh” over it!

I was bitten by the collecting bug about 30 years ago and have been decorating my home with vintage doo-dads and second-hand finds ever since.
My hope is that Whimsybop will inspire you to see the beauty in old forgotten things, and to give second-hand treasures new life again.
