Creating a Valentine Display

Now that the Christmas decorations are stored in the basement, it’s time to think about decking my halls for Valentine’s Day.

I’ve found that the easiest place to add a pop of festivity is on the mantle of the fireplace. In most houses, the fireplace tends to be the focal point of the room, making it the first “aha” that people see.

If you don’t have a fireplace, I’ll bet you can find a table to clear and decorate in the same fashion. Here’s my step-by-step of how I changed up my mantle for February.

I like to use lots of fun floral picks, some of them are repeats from Christmas. You can find these at most
arts & crafts stores.
Some of these are Christmas ornaments with ribbon removed, some are from the tops of floral picks and others are fancy gift adornments that I found in the gift wrapping section of the stationary isle.
Use whatever makes your heart go pitter patter!
Add your the floral picks to your favorite vases that fit your theme.

You’ll probably need to bend the pick wire to fit inside of the vase. I don’t like to cut mine in case I need them to be longer when I reuse them in another project.
Now you’ll want to arrange things on your mantle. I used silver candlesticks, vintage vases and this bust of a little boy that I found at the Hillsville Flea Market a few years ago.
Try to arrange things so that your eye will move freely without being drawn to one place. It helps if you group things in odd numbers. Also, try to keep the height and color spaced out to keep your eye moving and the arrangement interesting.

After I positioned my treasures on the mantle, I wove silver garland (aka Christmas tinsel garland) around each of them. Once I got it looking spiffy, I added the ornaments, picks and gift adornments here and there. For the grand finale I topped the candlesticks with silver Christmas bulbs – ta da!

Wasn’t that fun? I’ll show you what I did to the fireplace and hearth next time…stay tuned! If you like what you see, please invite your friends to Whimsybop with us!

I was bitten by the collecting bug about 30 years ago and have been decorating my home with vintage doo-dads and second-hand finds ever since.
My hope is that Whimsybop will inspire you to see the beauty in old forgotten things, and to give second-hand treasures new life again.
